Background
Workplace violence in the form of misbehavior in general and abusive and violent behavior continues to increase. OSHA data has shown that the medical environment accounts for the majority of non-fatal workplace violence and this includes that stemming from what should be considered “routine” interactions at places of intake and service. Some tactics can help reduce the dynamics that oftentimes lead to this behavior.

It is crucial for both leaders as well as those who interact with angry patients on a day-to-day basis to understand the dynamics, and how their responses can impact a positive outcome. Additionally, all need to understand the role of teamwork in the situations and how to debrief situations to improve response to future incidents.

Mr. Cummings has nearly 40 years of experience in healthcare security. For 32 years he led the security program for the largest healthcare system in Wisconsin and since 2018 has provided consulting services to healthcare clients across the country. Mr. Cummings is a member of the organization and has served extensively in leadership roles at ASIS International and the International Association for Healthcare Safety and Security (IAHSS). He graduated from Marquette University (BA) and Webster University (MA in Business and Organizational Security Management. He has been Board Certified in Security Management (CPP) since 1985. Mr. Cummings has been a frequent presenter at professional educational events and has authored articles for publication in security publications.
